Brighton Museum & Art Gallery

Brighton Museum & Art Gallery’s 20th Century collection traces the main developments in art and design from Art Nouveau, through Modernism and Surrealism, to Postmodernism and the contemporary. Though the Decorative Art and Design collection has a strong profile, with works such as Sofa Mae West’s Lips by Salvador Dali, the fine art collection is not as prominent particularly with work post World War II. The Eric and Jean Cass Gift significantly addresses this and will enable the curators to illustrate the key movements within 20th Century art and make clear connections between these art works and decorative art and design pieces on display. Through the Gift Brighton have received works that draw out a connection between British modernism and decorative art, including prints by Barbara Hepworth and Victor Pasmore, a ceramic work by Pablo Picasso, paintings by Eileen Agar and Gillian Ayres and an ivory stand by Belgium designer Ettore Sottsass.
